How this calculator works

Wall length is divided by stud spacing and rounded upward to estimate the number of spaces.

One additional stud is included to close the final end of each straight wall.

The result is multiplied by the number of identical walls.

User-entered extra studs are then added before the waste allowance is applied.

The final result is rounded upward because framing studs are ordered as whole pieces.

This calculator is intended for material planning and does not perform structural engineering.

Stud Framing Planning Guide

How to Calculate Wall Studs, Spacing, Waste and Cost

Plan straight-wall stud quantities from wall length, stud spacing, wall quantity, additional framing allowance, waste percentage and optional price per stud.

01

What Does the Stud Calculator Estimate?

The calculator estimates studs for one or more identical straight walls from wall length, spacing, wall count, extra studs and waste allowance.

It also reports wall length, stud spaces, base quantity, extra studs, waste studs and optional estimated material cost.

02

Wall Stud Spacing and Quantity Formula

Wall length is divided by stud spacing and rounded upward to estimate the number of spaces.

Spaces per wall = ceil(Wall length ÷ Stud spacing)
Base studs per wall = Spaces per wall + 1

For identical walls, the base quantity is multiplied by the entered number of walls.

03

Stud Calculation Example

With a 4.8 m wall, 0.4 m spacing, one wall, no extra studs and 5% waste, the calculator gives:

ceil(4.8 ÷ 0.4) = 12 spaces
12 + 1 = 13 base studs
ceil(13 × 1.05) = 14 final studs

The waste portion is one stud and total wall length is 4.8 m.

04

Extra Studs and Waste Allowance

Extra studs per wall are multiplied by wall count and added to the base quantity before waste is applied.

Subtotal = Base studs + Extra studs
Final studs = ceil(Subtotal × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100))

The reported end-stud figure is informational and is not separately added again to the subtotal.

05

Estimate Stud Material Cost

When a price per stud is supplied, estimated material cost is the final stud quantity multiplied by that price.

Estimated cost = Final studs × Price per stud

Fasteners, plates, headers, sheathing, labour, delivery and other framing materials are not automatically included.

06

Stud Measurement and Framing Planning Tips

Measure each straight wall carefully and use the spacing specified for the project. Keep walls separate when their dimensions or framing requirements differ.

Openings, corners, intersections, headers and structural conditions can require additional material. Verify applicable project and building requirements before construction.

Plan Stud Quantities Before You Buy

Use the Stud Calculator for an initial material estimate, then review openings, corners, intersections, headers and other project-specific framing before ordering studs.
