How this calculator works

A single insulation area is calculated from length multiplied by height or width.

The single area is multiplied by the number of identical areas.

Waste allowance is added to calculate the total required insulation coverage.

Required coverage is divided by the coverage per pack or roll, then rounded upward.

If a price is entered, estimated material cost is calculated from the final pack or roll quantity.

Insulation Material Planning Guide

How to Calculate Insulation Packs, Waste and Cost

The Gallop Insulation Calculator estimates the area you need to cover, the number of insulation packs or rolls required, waste-adjusted material quantity and optional material cost. Enter the dimensions of one area, the number of identical areas and the coverage stated on the insulation product.

01

What Does the Insulation Calculator Estimate?

The calculator multiplies the entered length by the height or width to determine one insulation area. It then multiplies that value by the number of identical areas to calculate the total area requiring insulation.

Total area is compared with the coverage supplied by one insulation pack or roll. The calculator reports both the basic quantity and the final whole-pack or whole-roll quantity after the selected waste allowance.

02

Insulation Calculator Formula

The calculator follows these calculation steps:

Single Area = Length × Height or Width
Total Area = Single Area × Number of Identical Areas
Base Packs / Rolls = ceil(Total Area ÷ Coverage per Pack / Roll)
Required Area = Total Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)
Final Packs / Rolls = ceil(Required Area ÷ Coverage per Pack / Roll)
Extra Packs / Rolls = Final Quantity − Base Quantity
03

Insulation Quantity Calculation Example

Consider one area measuring 4 m long and 2.4 m high.

4 m × 2.4 m = 9.60 m²

If one insulation pack or roll covers 10 m², the basic requirement is 9.60 ÷ 10 = 0.96. Because insulation is ordered in whole packs or rolls, the basic quantity rounds upward to 1.

With a 10% waste allowance, required coverage becomes 10.56 m². At 10 m² coverage per pack or roll, the final requirement rounds upward to 2 packs or rolls.

04

How Waste Affects Insulation Quantity

A waste allowance provides extra material for cutting, trimming, fitting around obstructions and installation losses. The calculator accepts a waste allowance from 0% to 50%.

Required Area = Total Area × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100)

For a 9.60 m² area, a 10% waste allowance increases the required coverage to 10.56 m². Whether this increases the final pack or roll count depends on the coverage supplied by each product.

05

Estimate Insulation Material Cost

Enter an optional price per pack or roll to estimate the material cost for the final waste-adjusted quantity.

Estimated Cost = Final Packs / Rolls × Price per Pack / Roll

For example, if the final requirement is 2 packs or rolls and each costs $45:

2 × $45 = $90

Labour, fixings, membranes, vapour control layers and other installation materials are not automatically included in this estimate.

Insulation Measurement and Ordering Tips

Measure the finished installation area carefully and use the actual coverage printed on the insulation pack or roll. Product dimensions and stated coverage can vary between insulation types and manufacturers.

Confirm the required insulation type, thickness, thermal performance, installation method and applicable local building requirements separately before purchasing.

Plan Insulation Materials Before You Buy

Use the Insulation Calculator to estimate total coverage, basic and waste-adjusted pack or roll quantities, extra material and optional material cost. Confirm product coverage, insulation type, thickness, thermal requirements and installation method before ordering.
