The calculator multiplies total fence length by finished fence height to estimate the fence area. Panel quantity is based on the total fence run and the usable width of each panel.
It also estimates the number of posts from the selected post spacing, adds the selected waste allowance to the panel requirement and can calculate optional panel and post material costs.
The calculator follows these main calculation steps:
Consider a fence run that is 20 m long and 1.8 m high, using panels with a usable width of 1.8 m.
The basic panel requirement is 20 ÷ 1.8 = 11.11, which rounds upward to 12 panels. With a 10% waste allowance, the waste-adjusted calculation becomes 12.22, so the final requirement rounds upward to 13 panels.
If posts are spaced every 1.8 m, the calculator uses ceil(20 ÷ 1.8) + 1, giving 13 posts.
Waste allowance provides extra panel material for cuts, damaged pieces, layout adjustments and other installation losses. The calculator accepts a waste allowance from 0% to 50%.
Because panels are ordered as whole units, even a small waste allowance can increase the final quantity when the adjusted requirement crosses the next whole-panel boundary.
Optional panel and post prices can be entered separately. The calculator multiplies each price by its calculated quantity and combines both values when estimating the material cost.
Gates, concrete, fixings, caps, labour, delivery and other installation materials are not automatically included.
Measure the complete fence run carefully and use the actual usable width of the selected panels. Confirm the manufacturer's recommended post spacing rather than assuming every fence system uses the same spacing.
