How this calculator works

A single wall area is calculated from wall length multiplied by wall height.

The single wall area is multiplied by the number of identical walls to find total wall area.

Drywall sheet area is calculated from sheet length multiplied by sheet width.

Total wall area is divided by sheet area to estimate the basic number of sheets.

The selected waste allowance is added before the final drywall sheet quantity is rounded upward.

If a price per sheet is entered, estimated material cost is calculated from the final sheet quantity.

Drywall Material Planning Guide

How to Calculate Drywall Sheets, Waste and Cost

The Gallop Drywall Calculator estimates wall area, drywall sheet quantity, waste allowance, extra sheets and optional material cost. Enter the dimensions of one wall, the number of identical walls and the usable length and width of the drywall sheets available from your supplier.

01

What Does the Drywall Calculator Estimate?

The calculator first multiplies wall length by wall height to determine the area of one wall. That area is then multiplied by the number of identical walls to calculate the total wall area.

Total wall area is compared with the usable area of one drywall sheet to estimate the required whole-sheet quantity before and after waste.

02

Drywall Calculator Formula

The calculator follows these actual formulas:

Single Wall Area = Wall Length × Wall Height
Total Wall Area = Single Wall Area × Number of Walls
Sheet Area = Sheet Length × Sheet Width
Exact Base Sheets = Total Wall Area ÷ Sheet Area
Base Sheets = ceil(Exact Base Sheets)
Final Sheets = ceil(Exact Base Sheets × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100))
03

Drywall Sheet Calculation Example

Consider one wall measuring 4 m long and 2.4 m high.

4 m × 2.4 m = 9.60 m² wall area

A drywall sheet measuring 2.4 m × 1.2 m covers:

2.4 m × 1.2 m = 2.88 m² per sheet

Dividing 9.60 m² by 2.88 m² gives about 3.33 sheets. The base quantity therefore rounds upward to 4 sheets. With a 10% waste allowance, the final quantity remains 4 sheets.

04

How Waste Affects Drywall Sheet Quantity

Waste helps account for cuts, damaged edges and layout inefficiency. The calculator accepts a waste allowance from 0% to 50% and applies it to the exact unrounded sheet requirement before rounding the final quantity upward.

Waste Area = Total Wall Area × Waste % ÷ 100
Extra Sheets = Final Sheets − Base Sheets

For the 9.60 m² example, 10% waste equals 0.96 m². Because the rounded base and final quantities are both 4 sheets, the calculator reports 0 extra sheets.

05

Estimate Drywall Material Cost

Enter an optional price per drywall sheet to estimate material cost from the final whole-sheet quantity.

Estimated Cost = Final Sheets × Price per Sheet

For example, if the calculated requirement is 4 sheets and each sheet costs $25:

4 sheets × $25 = $100

Labour, fasteners, joint compound, tape and other installation costs are not automatically included.

Drywall Measurement and Ordering Tips

Measure finished wall dimensions carefully and use the actual drywall sheet dimensions supplied by your merchant. Sheet orientation and cut layout can change practical material requirements.

This calculator does not deduct doors or windows in its current version. Board type, thickness, fire rating and moisture requirements must also be confirmed separately before ordering.

Plan Drywall Sheets Before You Buy

Use the Drywall Calculator to estimate total wall area, basic and waste-adjusted sheet quantities, extra sheets and optional material cost. Confirm openings, sheet orientation, cutting layout, board type, thickness and supplier dimensions before purchasing.
